En 1848, Phineas Gage, ouvrier du bâtiment, est victime d’un grave accident. Une tige de fer lui transperce la tête et lui blesse la partie avant du cerveau. Gage ne meurt pas, mais sa personnalité change. Il n’est plus gentil ni organisé.

Cet événement est important pour les médecins. Il montre que le cerveau et la personnalité sont liés à certaines parties du cerveau. Gage trouve ensuite du travail au Chili. Son boulot est répétitif. Pour Gage, c’est une thérapie. Son cerveau doit apprendre à fonctionner différemment. Les médecins découvrent que le cerveau peut changer.

L’accident de Gage a donné naissance à un nouveau domaine des neurosciences. Ça nous apprend que le cerveau peut s’adapter et se remettre de blessures graves.
