Le basmati est une variété de riz très chère originaire de la région du Pendjab, mais cette région est partagée entre l’Inde et le Pakistan.

Les deux pays veulent protéger le nom « basmati » dans l’UE pour gagner plus d’argent. Si un nom est protégé, les autres pays ne peuvent pas l’utiliser. L’Inde a demandé à l’UE une protection spéciale en 2018, et le Pakistan a fait de même en 2023. Mais les deux pays ne se parlent pas, donc ils ne peuvent pas prendre de décision commune.

D’autres pays, comme Chypre avec le fromage Halloumi, ont collaboré avec l’UE pour protéger leur produit. Mais comme l’Inde et le Pakistan ne se parlent pas, près de 90 % du riz Basmati vendu dans le monde n’est pas authentique. Si l’UE n’agit pas rapidement, le nom « Basmati » risque de perdre complètement sa valeur particulière.
